The Kidde Smoke & Carbon Monoxide Detector, Hardwired Interconnect Combination Smoke & CO Alarm with Battery Backup & Voice Alert, model KN-COSM-IBA, is an AC-wired, ionization alarm operates on a 120VAC power source with 2-AA battery backup. Using ionization sensor technology, the wired smoke alarm detects invisible fire particles. The combination CO detector provides continuous protection from carbon monoxide, even during power outages. A red LED will flash & be accompanied by 3 long alarm beeps followed by a verbal warning that warns of fire, carbon monoxide, & low battery. The Hush feature silences the fire alarm for approximately 9 minutes. The green LED on the alarm will flash every 2 seconds when Hush is activated and canceled. A maximum of 24 Kidde devices can be interconnected in a multiple station arrangement, but cannot exceed the NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) limit of 18 initiation devices, of which 12 can be smoke alarms. With 18 initiating devices (smoke, heat, CO, etc.), interconnected, it is still possible to interconnect 6 strobe lights and or relay modules. UL Certified with a 10-year limited warranty. Meets requirements of UL 2034, UL217, NFPA72, The State of California Fire Marshall, NFPA 101, FHA, & HUD.

Good replacement for old recalled unit. Hope this one has the bugs fixed!
My old combination fire/CO unit from Kidde refused to self test. Apparently, it had reached the end of its 8 year service life, but simply stopped working without playing the warning beeps mentioned in the manual!!!! The house was likely left without carbon monoxide detection for a few years. Kidde recalled the old unit for this defect. They only offered a 50% discount from their own store, which came out to more than the Amazon price, so I just bought it here.So far so good. It integrated with 8 other fire-only detectors in the house perfectly. Only a fire alarm from the unit will trigger the other fire detectors in the house. Carbon monoxide detection only triggers this unit, but would also trigger other wired dual-sensor units in the house, if I had installed them.I bought a Kidde relay module that actuates a wireless button tied into my Hubitat home automation system. When a fire alarm sounds anywhere in the house, I have it programmed to notify my IPhone, switch on all house lights, and announce the fire on my Echo devices. Works great! The relay module also permits adding a wired commercial “pull station” (like in schools or commercial buildings) to manually sound the fire alarm in all units in the house. The relay only responds to fire alarms, but a version is sold that responds to carbon monoxide alarms too, using the same single-wire wired interface.

Product as expected. But Amazon’s claim process for a defective unit was subpar.
I bought 6 of these to replace the older KN-COSM-IB’s which had hit the end of their 7 year life. As others have said, they were a perfect fit into the old base, and the electrical plug was the same. Made the replacement super easy. Out of the 6 I bought, 1 of them was defective out of the box. It was chirping an error code, look it up in the manual and it says the alarm is defective. No big deal, electronics are defective sometimes. Emailed Kidde tech support, very nice agent over there responded within hours confirming the alarm was defective and Amazon should replace it. That’s when it all went downhill. To request a replacement from Amazon, I had to talk with a “tech support” agent at Amazon. This person, while very nice, had absolutely no idea how a smoke alarm works. They asked me to change batteries, reset the unit, push the power button (smoke alarms don’t have power buttons……) asked me the same generic questions over and over…WHEN KIDDE ALREADY CONFIRMED THE ALARM WAS BAD! (and I told the Amazon agent this numerous times). It took 45 minutes of back and forth for Amazon to finally send out a replacement (which arrived in 2 days) and they didn’t even want the defective alarm returned (odd). I’m not at all upset that I got a defective alarm, stuff happens. But the runaround to get a replacement from Amazon was disappointing and it needs to get its act together. Kidde’s customer service was excellent and for now all the alarms are now working, let’s hope they all go the 10 years they’re advertised for.

Upgrade to new style smoke detector
Item came with plug adaptor to match old model wiring harness. With the instructions it was easy to change to updated plug and mounting ring. Changed out the old and installed the new in less than 15 minutes. Now I’m good for several more years of protection,

Perfect Replacement!
We have 10 USI hardwired in line smoke and smoke/carbon combo detectors in a house that is just over 5 years old. During the last year the smoke/carbon combo detectors have been giving us lots of problems. The final straw was when we were replacing batteries weekly for a hardwired detector. I heavily rely on Amazon reviews and because of Amazon I purchased this combo alarm. You are supposed to use the brand of hardwired alarms throughout your home. Before replacing 10 alarms that are only 5 years old (half their life span) I wanted to test one out. I am beyond happy with our new alarm! When I started searching for a new combo I saw the terrible review for USI with many customers experiencing the same thing I did with weekly battery replacements. We even had one USI dector cause a 9V battery to explode inside the detector. After purchasing the Kidde combo alarm I waited a few days to replace because I thought I would need an extended period of time. I had the old detector out and the new one in place in under 15 minutes. I flipped the breaker undid the old wiring nuts. Put in the new wire connection with no issues at all. The hardest part was lining up the plate to the old screw holes. After I figured that out I was home free. Everything was now plugged in and I was ready for the ultimate test. I flipped the breaker on ran a test and it did exactly what it is supposed to do. The alarm went off and so did all of the others in our house.I am now going to replace the rest of the alarms in our home with Kidde. I only wish our builder did not use sub par materials.

Smooth Replacement
Had 6 smoke detectors that were at their 10 year life span and needed replacing. Ordered these, arrived in a couple of days and replacement went smoothly, (no need to replace the ceiling mounting, thank you very much!), set for another 10 years!

Adapters included
I never leave reviews, but I was so impressed I had to send one ouy. I looked up my model number and ordered a replacement. When I went to install it, but the wire insert didn’t work, so I figured I would have to rewire it. Low and behold, the smoke detector came with the adapters! Way to know ahead of time what I would need! Thanks! 🙂

Excellent, it was plug and play. It sounds few seconds, then the next sensor on the lower level sounds few seconds, then the next sensor on the basement sound few seconds as well, then it is ready and silent.I got scared when it started sounding because the other 2 sensors are not the same brand; they were already installed, so I thought they were not compatible, but fortunately they just need around 1 min to talk each other and set up. They shut off by themselves after around a minute. A bit scaring but it is part of the process. Thanks

I liked the fact that it was so easy to install! Our existing device expired and recently there have been a number of carbon monoxide poisoning in our city! I feel much safer having replaced the old device!

I had an existing smoke detector in my home which I purchased 20 years ago. I believe that I recently heard that you must change them every 10 years to ensure that they are going to work when needed. Well, no point in having them if they are going to work so I ordered these. I have been slowly upgrading most things in my home to smart devices and since smoke and CO detectors are so important, thought it best to do so with these also. I have never had on in my basement which is, IMO, where one is most needed. It did require me doing some electrical work because it does need a box to mount on, but that was no issue. If you are not able to do this yourself, hire an electrician, it is less than an hours work. If you are simply replacing existing detectors, it takes seconds. To be honest, I cant say how good the instructions are as I didn’t read them. These devices have 3 wires (white, black and ground) an it is simple to connect. Once they are both installed, they piggy back on your Wi-Fi to communicate with each other. If one is tripped, they both go off. The only feature that they are missing is a safety light once activated but, truthfully, a bright light in a smoky hall is actually blinding anyway, These are a great value at 120 for the pair. Many others smart devices cost that for an individual unit.

My personal opinion is that these are needlessly complicated compared to older detectors; but I can understand arguments for having an integrated system of detectors. They could be improved by avoiding proprietary features allowing safe integration of any detector. Safety first! This was a one-for-one straight replacement of an older version of the exact same detector. I had the original manual which indicated that the warning beep that the older detector emitted indicated a pre-expiry-date failure of the alarm. I’m not an expert, so I had to wing-and-prayer trust my interpretation of the manual. The packaged arrived from Amazon in one of their plastic bags, and had been crushed in shipping (see image of unopened box) resulting in the distortion of the three connector pins. Despite this, I was able to reshape the pins with pliers and install the detector in the original carriage. No beep. Tested and working. Problem solved.I would say that if it can survive this abuse and still do the job, then it’s a pretty good product.

This unit was a direct replacement of an existing one. Electrical connections were correct and the detector easily attached to the existing base on the ceiling.
